ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student

With two children in college and two in high school, our family has used its share of college board testing prep courses! ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student is a different kind of test prep course, however.

What is Different About ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student

The author of ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student, Dr. James Stobaugh, is an SAT/ACT coach and certified test grader with thirty-five years of experience. He obviously has a depth of knowledge that is readily apparent, and his heart for the Lord shines throughout the course.

ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student‘s introduction gives a great overview of what’s expected on the test, along with specific tips for making the best use of study time. This book can either be used over a school year, at one lesson a week, or in as little as fifty days, as more concentrated study.

Each of the fifty lessons in ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student opens with a devotional and Scripture for memory work. There are also “Prayer Points,” a character quality/virtue paired with a corresponding Scripture. The author notes in the introduction (p. 11) that stress reduction is crucial for a student to do well on the ACT, and that “for Christians, at least, stress reduction is best accomplished by a frequent and thorough devotional and Bible memorization program.” I like that the course doesn’t neglect the spiritual aspect of education for Christian students. However, students expecting a straight test prep book may not enjoy the devotionals as much as we did.

What’s Included in ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student

After the devotional, each lesson continues with the specific test prep instruction, including the following:

  • exercises in writing, vocabulary, math, science, and English
  • small sections titled “Test-Taking Insight” which feature specific, practical tips for the test and insights on the test itself (such as, you won’t be penalized for guessing!)
  • encouragement to read widely for building vocabulary, complete with a fairly comprehensive book list in the appendix which represents a good cross-section of literature
  • complete answer key for a truly independent course

There is also a link for a free essay workbook. My student enjoys the short lessons and activities of ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student and is working her way through the recommended reading list. She already feels much more confident about taking her ACT in a few months!

Why such a high rating? To me, ACT & College Preparation Course for the Christian Student sets itself apart from any other test prep course we’ve used due to ease of use, the way it’s written to the student and draws them in, and its practical test-taking preparation and strategies. Aside from that, I did not expect to use the words “thoroughly engaging” in describing a test preparation book. James Stobaugh uses personal anecdotes and essays throughout to create a most interesting course. Highly recommend!
